1) Some Hard Earnings Season Questions For Investors + Lee’s take on KO, PHM, ABT, AAPL, INTC, NYT, JAVA, CAT, IBM, GE, PFE, MOT, XRX, LVS, and CSCO

Ah yes… It’s that delightful time again known as earnings season. So far, companies like Coca-Cola (KO), Pulte Homes (PHM), Abbot Labs (ABT), Apple (AAPL) and Intel (INTC) have reported results and there has not been any earth-shattering or market-panicking company revelations. October is historically the time of year when that happens. But so far it has been relatively quiet.

It’s always interesting to see the ways company officials can spin earnings news so they look great, the company appears healthy, and investors don’t feel the urge to dump their stock. It’s also the time of year when you hear a lot about one time charges, restructuring costs, accrued revenues, unrealized gains, goodwill, and other modern wonders of creative accounting.
What I would like to see is the biggest company of all to come clean four times a year with some kind of earnings report. What would happen if this company had to follow the same accounting rules we all have to live by? What would happen if this company came under the microscope of ruthless Wall Street analysts?
What company am I talking about? The U.S. Government, of course, and we are all shareholders… |

Sure he looks happy…
Apple had a great earnings report. |
