Fall is in the air. This is the time of year when we ask ourselves why Major League Baseball insists on forcing players and fans alike to endure cold, rain, and even the occasional bit of snow. If you live in the East or Midwest and have attended a game recently, you know what I mean. Anyway, with baseball nearing the end and football just getting into full swing, perhaps you missed the third quarter earnings season get underway.
Once again we embark on that most noble of journeys, earnings season. This week marks the start of the third quarter earnings season, as Alcoa (AA) reported earnings on Wednesday. The company posted a surprise profit through cost cutting and higher aluminum prices after three consecutive quarterly losses.
|
Alcoa, which has curtailed metal production by more than 20 percent and cut its workforce by about 30 percent since the economic downturn began a year ago, said there are signs that key markets are stabilizing and it expects global consumption to rise by 11 percent in the second half of this year. The bullish news from the first member of the Dow Jones Industrials to report results for the latest quarter sets a very positive tone for the third quarter earnings season.
The Street is expecting corporate earnings to decline 24.8%, which would mark the first time the S&P 500 has recorded nine straight quarters of negative growth since Thomson Reuters began tracking the data in 1998. However, that 24.8% drop is still slightly better than the 27.3% fall in the second quarter. In fact, analysts say earnings should show signs of improvement over the short term, due to cost control, inventory restocking, and easy comparisons against a terrible 2008, particularly among the financials. |
