Ring around the rosy, a pocket full of posies; ashes, ashes, we all fall down!

That familiar nursery rhyme can bring back joyful memories of childhood, or pictures of dead corpses piling up on the streets of London. That sweet childhood song may refer to the great plagues hitting Britain and killing off large numbers. Some state that ring around the rosy refers to the unique rash, flowers were put in the pockets to help people smell better, and we all fall down refers to everyone dying in the end. Plagues are not to be taken lightly as they have wreaked havoc in the world repeatedly. In 1350, 1593, 1640, and 1770 are just a few of the years plagues have swept known civilization.

More recently, in 1918 the Spanish Flu killed millions and it is still in our collective memory since it was well documented by pictures and movies. Could happen now? The World Health Organization does not seem to be taking H1N1 "Swine Flu" lightly and has raised its pandemic alert to Phase 6 -- the highest! Pharmaceutical companies and governments are scrambling with plans and trying to get vaccines ready. China announced a vaccine that is ready now, and our government –with stricter procedures – hopes to have one ready by October.

Could it happen now?
